Now streaming does benefits artists longterm however, if your music isn’t properly registered you are missing 50% of your royalties off the rip every time somebody “streams” your music. I’ll discuss this later.
Now if you understand the mechanics behind streaming and understand how the average person consumes music, then you will understand somewhat of how to maneuver the platform. But you have to remember there’s millions of songs on Spotify. People have a plethora of choices, so understand they won’t listen to you everyday. You have to put your music in front of somebody new everyday in order for you to grow your following and sustain listeners. Major artist are able to sustain listeners because they are constantly being put in front of new people everyday via endorsements, marketing and advertising. They also have a back office that’s making sure all the music is properly tagged, the meta data is right and registrations are done so the revenue came come in.
As an independent artist, you have to do the same thing to reap the full benefits. If your aren’t registered with a PRO, that’s 50% of your royalties that’s being held because 50% goes to the copyright owner which is paid out via your PRO through publishing. So if you don’t have a publishing entity set up, then there’s no money to distribute anywhere.
